REVIEW: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Marvel Illustrated) by Eric Shanower

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars, Genre: Graphic Novel, Pages: 216, Level: Easy

Book Description from Barnes & Noble:

The premier American fantasy adventure gets the Merry Marvel treatment! Eisner Award-winning writer/artist Eric Shanower (Age of Bronze) teams up with fan-favorite artist Skottie Young (New X-Men) to bring L. Frank Baum’s beloved classic to life! When Kansas farm girl Dorothy flies away to the magical Land of Oz, she fatally flattens a Wicket Witch, liberates a Scarecrow and is hailed by the Munchkin people as a great sorceress… but all she really wants to know is: how does she get home?

This tells the story of Dorothy’s trip to Oz in graphic novel form. Shanower stays true to the original book- the slippers are silver, the wicked witch first sends wolves and crows, Dorothy encounters the city made of china, etc. The artwork is phenomenal and that is what caught my eye. I began reading the whole Oz series a while ago and have read the first three in the series. They are very good books. If you enjoyed the books and like graphic novels, I highly recommend this series. If you never read the books and want a short version, Shanower gives you this. Hopefully it will peak your interest enough to read the originals.
