REVIEW: Time Warp Trio #2: The Not-So-Jolly Roger by Jon Scieszka

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars, Genre: Fiction, Pages: 64, Level: Easy

Book Description:

“It’s the Time Warp Trip to the rescue! Only now they’re rescuing their own adventure-loving hides. Blackbeard, the meanest, ugliest pirate ever, has our accidental time travelers cornered. Should Fred, Sam, and Joe join his pirate crew- or become shark munchies?

The Book is up to its old tricks, zapping our heroes into the past- and into big trouble. How can the trio zap themselves out of here? By doing the time warp!”

Once again, the boys are transported back in time where they meat Blackbeard and are taken hostage on the ship Queen Anne’s Revenge. Worried they will have to walk the plank, the boys try to figure out where the magical book is so they can get back home safely.

As with the first, the book is a quick and entertaining read. It is fun to visit historical figures and Scieszka does not beat around the bush with details; he tells it like it is. So expect people to die. Expect people to walk the plank and drown. Expect cannon fire. Expect warships. And expect gross.

The series seems more aimed at boys, but my 9-year old daughter and I read it together and she thought it was hilarious. I guess girls also think gross is funny. Just a warning- there is a little harsh language in this book. Apparently pirates were known for their flowery language and Scieszka includes it here as well. It’s not too bad, but I did pass over a ‘hell’ and ‘bloody’ without reading them out loud.
