My Friend is Sad (Elephant & Piggie #2) by Mo Willems

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars, Genre: Children’s Fiction, Pages: 64, Reading Level: Easy

Book Description:

Gerald is careful. Piggie is not.

Piggie cannot help smiling. Gerald can.

Gerald worries so that Piggie does not have to.

Gerald and Piggie are best friends.

In My Friend is Sad, elephant Gerald is down in the dumps. Piggie is determined to cheer him up by dressing as a cowboy, a clown, and even a robot! But what does it take to make a sad elephant happy? The answer will make even pessimistic elephants smile.

While the story and vocabulary are for toddlers, it has adult humor in it as well, or at least humor adults will appreciate. I chuckle every time I read one of these books. And there are some great lessons to be learned.

There is a reason Elephant wears glasses! Read as Piggie tries to cheer up her friend and is surprised when she finds out, after all her failed attempts, what it takes in the end.

All his books display Mo Willems’ wonderful imagination and outstanding sense of humor. They are perfect to read aloud with my toddler! I highly recommend all the Elephant & Piggie books.
