Hi! Welcome to my book blog.
In all honesty, I felt a little silly about starting a blog. I’m in my early forties and I thought blogs were something for those younger than me. I love to read and have a lot of friends who also enjoy reading; they often ask for my opinion of books or for recommendations. I was posting my reviews on Facebook, Goodreads, Amazon and Barnes & Noble, but they did not allow me much flexibility. So my husband recommended a blog. I thought, “What do I have to lose?”
The result is what you now see. I am not flashy, so the style is a bit simple. In addition, I am continually adding to the structure, format, etc, so don’t be surprised if one day you visit and there is a polka dot background or a random page shows up.
All my reviews are based on how much I enjoy a book. I do not rate down for typos, grammatical errors, awkward syntax, faulty science, etc., unless they affect my reading experience in an overly negative way. Also, I primarily read for enjoyment, so not every book I read has to be intellectual or a prize winner.
On the right, you will notice that I list the books I am currently reading and the next in queue. At any given time, I may be reading five or six books at the same time. There are reasons for this. First, I cannot read a scary book at night, and I love scary books. Therefore, I usually have a non-scary book to read before bed. Second, sometimes I review books or beta read for independent authors. While I love doing that, I am not just reading for pleasure, so the process takes a little longer and more brain power. I like to have a light book to read at the same time for when my brain needs a break. Third, I usually listen to an audiobook while I work out. Finally, my daughter is now old enough to read longer books and soon, I will begin reading longer books to my son. I like to read aloud with my children and if my daughter has a book to read as a class assignment, I read it as well.
In 2012, I happily discovered independent authors for the first time. All the independent authors, with whom I have come into contact, greatly appreciate honest reviews of their books. I have been fortunate to discover some really good independent works and would love to help spread the word about them. I am trying to read at least one indie author a month.
Also, while I seem to be reading more, I notice that I am reading fewer books. I discovered The New Yorker recently and my total number of books read has suffered as a result.
I love to discuss books, so if you have read any of the same books as I have, please post your thoughts; I would love to read them.
Last, but not least, I saw someone post this and I thought it was good idea, so I will post my own version of This Reader’s Bill of Rights–
1. I reserve the right to read multiple books at the same time.
2. I reserve the right to take as long as I wish to read any given book.
3. I reserve the right to arbitrarily put aside a book without finishing it.
4. I reserve the right to change my ‘to read’ list for any reason that tickles my fancy.
5. I reserve the right NOT to read.
6. I reserve the right to speed read or scan paragraphs if I find the story tedious.
7. I reserve the right to re-read any book I choose as many times as I wish.
8. I reserve the right to change my opinion of a book whenever I want.
That pretty much sums it up. I hope you enjoy my blog. Happy Reading!
